Reading:  Rachael read selections from "The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales" told by Virginia Hamilton, "African-American Real-Aloud Stories" edited by Susan Kantor.  Also, selections from "The Art of Loving Well: A Character Curriculum" by Dr. Stephan Ellenwood, were read. Grade: 4 (E)
 
Spelling: Rachael corrects misspelled words and rewrites assignments so that spelling is correct throughout her work.      Grade: 3 (G)
 
Writing, Grammar & Language Arts: This quarter the homeschool used Scholastic Guides: "Putting It in Writing: Reports, Letters, Essays and More", Writing Stories: Fantastic Fiction from Start to Finish", and "Writing with Style: Making Your Writing Stand Out"  Grade: 3 (G)
 
Health & Safety: Poisoning prevention, gardening safety, healthy nutrition, playground and sports safety.  Grade: 4(E)
 
History:  Quakes of 1811 & 1812 that created waterfalls on the Mississippi, Ancient City of Al Rawda revealed in modern X-ray, ancient El Pantano traders, artifacts and graves discovered in Mexico's Mascota Valley ; how English settlers who brought West Indian tobacco & European livestock such as pigs to 17th century Virginia triggered changes that would bring that current ecosystem to an end while replacing it with a new one; India's poor, caste system & child labor; the wall along the California-Mexico border to keep immigrants out ; underpaid laborers in China.  Grade: 3 (G)
 
Science: National Geographic: The Global Fish Crisis resulting from high-tech harvesting & wasteful management, significance of wildfires, effects of pollution & nets on aquatic life, the importance of honeybees in the world's agricultural future in light of recent colony collapse syndrome (epidemic?), vanishing sea ice & its effect on creatures that live in the polar region, receding glaciers and mountain snowcaps, bats in Panama.  The homeschool also used "Science Crafts for Kids" by Gwen Diehn & Terry Krautwurst.  Grade: 3 (G)
 
Art: This quarter Rachael used computer programs to create computer-generated art and photo collages. She also spends lots of time drawing.  Grade: 3 (G)
 
Music:  Evolution of African-American Music: slave-era music, blues, soul, jazz, rap, hip-hop etc. Rachael continues to practice guitar, fiddle and piano,  Grade: 3 (G)
 
Physical Education: Rachael has participated in running, games of tag, scootering, bike riding, skateboarding, walking and resistance workouts on the Total Gym. Grade: 4 (E)
 
Typing & Computer: Rachael continues to type regularly both for pleasure and completing her homeschool work.       Grade: 4 (E)
 
Teacher Comments - 4th Quarter
 
Rachael is progressing at a satisfactory level or above in all subject matter. She had no absences and has completed the required 225  hours of instruction.
